California: Land of Poop and Poverty

This is the transcript of the introduction for this episode of the Christopher Scott Talk Show Podcast:

Anybody who's been to California will tell you it's an incredible place. The giant Red Wood forests are a wonderland. The beaches are great. California's coast is the distance from Georgia to Massachusetts. When you look out over San Francisco Bay you get a perfect view of the Pacific Ocean framed in the red uprights of the Golden Gate Bridge. But, underneath all that is a nasty problem. It stinks from human crap. The homeless problem is so bad it's causing a public health problem. It's so bad it's listed as a travel advisory so visitors are prepared for what they'll see or, smell I suppose.

There's a lot of money there too. It's the second largest economy in the country. California has a bigger economy than Russia, Canada, Australia and even South Korea. It's also some to the highest concentration of billion dollar corporations. With all that money the good people of California have done more than any other state to help disadvantaged people. They have more programs and over the past few years they've have spent over a trillion dollars on poverty. So why does it have the highest poverty rate of any state?

The poop problem's just the start of California's problems. They also have a debt problem, $400 billion. So how did a state with so much money get into trouble like this?

The Chinese philosopher Confucius said, "In a country well governed, poverty is something to be ashamed of. In a country badly governed, wealth is something to be ashamed of." That's an interesting perspective considering we live in a time when being poor means being a victim. Does that mean California is badly governed? I'll let you decide.
