Sometimes I feel like the country has become one giant Jerry Springer Show. Do you remember that show?
TV talk shows became popular with the era of Phil Donahue. Good old Phil Donahue, he was a weird duck. It was his show that gave rise to the Oprah Winfrey show. They were hitting that day time viewer segment of mostly stay at home moms. It was clean and for the most part it was informative. Then came Jerry Springer.
His set list ranged from, it's not my baby to he slept with my sister. It was that kind of garbage and then most shows erupted in some kind of brawl. Anybody with 3 brain cells did stay on the channel long enough to say what is this crap. And he has millions of viewers - what does that tell you?
The whole thing was just this mudslinging, yelling accusations trash talk. Kind of like modern day news feeds on social media. Not much different then listening to politicians talk. It's like, in terms of maturity, as a society we've become a bunch of idiots. At least when it comes to social and government issues.
Everything has been reduced to one sentence sound bites, or memes, accusations and name calling. Where are we going with this? What does it accomplish?
If you step back and look at the viewpoints of Americans you'd say wow, there are two very different ideologies going here. We've become pitted against each other. Whatever your politics, whatever you believe you have to agree on one thing and that is that well we just can't seem to agree on much of anything.
Look at the headlines, look at your social media, what do you see? Black and white and there's no gray. I'm not talking about race. I'm talking about absolute opinions with little or no room for reason. Do you see that? Why is that?
Why is the country so polarized? Why can’t we agree on anything? How did we become enemies with each other?
I'll tell you why, there's a little game going on. It's not a secret but most people aren't aware of it. There's this little game of tit for tat. It's the politicians, it's the unions, big corporations and the media who are playing this little game. Sometimes you hear it called political correctness and sometimes extremism depending on the source and the conversation.
It's not the disagreements that have changed. If you take the time to look into it or your old enough to remember
you know all these arguments have been going on since the beginning. It's not new. What's different is how it's being communicated. The personal attacks, the lies, the deceptions. Whatever happened to a healthy debate?
What happened or is happening? What changed?
I'll explain exactly why.
