Boy Scouts of America Changing Name After Welcoming Girls

Over 110 million people have participated in the Boy Scouts since 1910. The Girl Scouts was formed shortly after in 1912 but now the Boy Scouts has dropped the word Boy and will be just Scouts, allowing girls and boys to participate.
This has me asking a few questions:
Why did they do it?
Does it matter?
If they had started this way would anybody care?
Why the push to put boys and girls, men and women together?
Has the Scouts lost their values?
